Parenting Time, not Visitation

As of July 15, 2015, the Massachusetts Family Court's website and forms have been updated to use the term "parenting time" in lieu of the outdated term "visitation."  Chief Justice Angela Ordoñez has made this long overdue change recognizing the national trend away from the pejorative term "visitation", which implies that one parent has less of a role than the other.

This was simply the right thing to do and we applaud the move.

    As times and culture change, it is fascinating to see how terms change. This is the first I have heard of parenting time, rather than visitation. Parenting time sounds so much more friendly. Even though parents are divorced, time spent with your children isn't just a visitation, it is time that you are still being a parent.

In Massachusetts the statutory waiting period after a Judgment of Divorce and before the divorce becomes final (or absolute) is called the Nisi period. UPDATE: The court has released a web calculating version of the 2021 MA Child Support Guidelines Worksheet .  It resolves some of the typos referred to below, but the unexpected calculations still apply.
